Golam Azam (literally means "Great Servant or Slave", aptly named considering his lifelong service to his masters, the Pakistanis) is the chief planner of many murders and rapes in 1971 war. During the war he termed the numerous rapes of Bangali married and unmarried women by the Pakistanis and their supporters as "Muta Marriages" (temporary marriages which are banned in traditional Islam) through self-styled religious edict (fatwa). He is not only very unrepentant of his and his party's war crime roles, but also very proud of it. Not many years ago he arrogantly made a remark "Ekattore bhul kori nai" (Did not make any mistake in 71). His party, the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (a political party based on Pakistani scholar Moududi’s twisted religious teachings), and other 'anti-liberation' entities which took part in the 1971 genocide were given license to operate in 1978, thanks to Dictator General Ziaur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

After the birth of two new states named Pakistan and India in August 1947 .The new nation of Pakistan included two geographically and culturally separate areas in the east and the west of india.

Along in this situation A planned military pacification carried out by the Pakistan Army — codenamed Operation Searchlight — started on 25 March to curb the Bengali nationalist movement by taking control of the major cities on 26 March, and then eliminating all opposition, political or military,within one month.
According to the Asia Times,

At a meeting of the military top brass, Yahya Khan declared: "Kill 3 million of them and the rest will eat out of our hands." Accordingly, on the night of 25 March, the Pakistani Army launched Operation Searchlight to "crush" Bengali resistance in which Bengali members of military services were disarmed and killed, students and the intelligentsia systematically liquidated and able-bodied Bengali males just picked up and gunned down.

In this situation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman signed an official declaration that read:
Today Bangladesh is a sovereign and independent country. On Thursday night, West Pakistani armed forces suddenly attacked the police barracks at Razarbagh and the EPR headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka. Many innocent and unarmed have been killed in Dhaka city and other places of Bangladesh. Violent clashes between E.P.R. and Police on the one hand and the armed forces of Pakistan on the other, are going on. The Bengalis are fighting the enemy with great courage for an independent Bangladesh. May Allah aid us in our fight for freedom. Joy Bangla.
Sheikh Mujib also called upon the people to resist the occupation forces through a radio message. Mujib was arrested on the night of 25–26 March 1971 at about 1:30 a.m. (as per Radio Pakistan’s news on 29 March 1971).
On 28 March Major Ziaur Rahman made another announcement,which is as follows: This is Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendro. I, Major Ziaur Rahman, at the direction of Bangobondhu sheikh Mujibur Rahman, hereby declare that the independent People's Republic of Bangladesh has been established. At his direction, I have taken command as the temporary Head of the Republic. In the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, I call upon all Bengalis to rise against the attack by the West Pakistani Army. We shall fight to the last to free our Motherland. By the grace of Allah, victory is ours. Joy Bangla.
The message was picked up by a Japanese ship in Bay of Bengal. It was then re-transmitted by Radio Australia and later by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1971, Pakistan's military dictator Yahya Khan allowed an election to be held, gambling that no party would get a clear majority. He was wrong, because an East Pakistani, ethnic Bengali dominated political party got enough votes to stake its claim to form the federal government in Pakistan. This was opposed by the West Pakistani elite and the West Pakistani dominated military. The relationship between Pakistan's two wings, East Pakistan and West Pakistan had remained turbulent. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto recalls being taught at school in West Pakistan that "East Pakistanis are short, dark and eat rice, whilst West Pakistanis are tall, fair and eat wheat". When the victorious East Bengali political party's right to govern was opposed a civil disobedience movement started in East Pakistan that was quelled by furious genocide of ethnic Bengalis by the West Pakistani dominated Army.
